What Cincinnati Lawns Are Up Against: Clay Soil and Summer Heat
Much of Cincinnati sits on heavy clay. Clay holds nutrients, but it packs down hard under mowing, foot traffic and freeze and thaw cycles. Once it compacts, water runs off instead of soaking in and roots stay shallow. Then a hot, dry Cincinnati summer hits a lawn that has nowhere to send its roots.
Two things help. Organic fertilizers add organic matter that improves soil structure over time, and core aeration pulls plugs of soil so air, water and feedings reach the root zone. Lawns with deep roots handle drought much better, which also means a lower water bill.
Our Programs and What They Cost
We offer two programs. Both are five services a year.
- Bridge: crabgrass prevention, five organic-based turf feedings, spot weed control and humates. The least pesticide we can use, applied only where weeds are.
- PureGreen: 100% pesticide free. Corn gluten meal, custom blended organic fertilizers, root and soil stimulation, and molasses that feeds the soil life. Weeds are managed with mowing practices and fall seeding, so we suggest adding fall aeration and seeding every year.

How is PureLawn different from the big lawn companies?
We spot treat weeds instead of blanket spraying, we use organic-based fertilizers that feed the soil, and we keep product out of storm drains and blow it off driveways and walks. Service calls between visits are free.
Is the lawn safe for kids and dogs?
On PureGreen, kids and pets can be on the lawn as soon as we leave. On Bridge, keep them off at least 3 to 4 hours, and 24 hours if you can.
Will an organic program work on my clay soil?
It is the best fit for it. Organic matter is what clay is missing, and adding it every visit improves soil structure over time. Pair it with fall core aeration for the fastest change.
When should I start?
Early spring is ideal so crabgrass prevention goes down on time, but you can start any time. Some of our customers started in late summer and saw a big change in the first season.
