3 Late Fall Lawn Tips

3 Late Fall Lawn Tips

It is nearly Winter and the lawn will soon hibernate until the Spring here in Ohio.  Here are 3 Late Fall Lawn Tips to help your grass continue to be beautiful next Spring.

  1.  Mulch or Rake Leaves – Do not let your leaves sit on the grass too long or for the entire Winter.  This can kill healthy grass.  Chop up your leaves with the mower.  This adds extra organic matter into the soil.  It is free fertilizer.  Everybody needs something free these days.  If you don’t like how it looks when you mulch up the leaves, then you must remove them in another way like raking them up.
  2.  Mow the Grass Short – This is the only time of the year we recommend mowing the grass below 3 inches.  Gradually get your lawn cut down to 2-2.5 inches going into the Winter.  This can help prevent Snow Mold Fungus.  Snow mold fungus likes when the grass is really long going into the Winter.  The grass will lay over like a bad toupee and can cause brown spots in the Spring.
  3. Feed the Lawn – This is the ideal time to fertilize grass.  The energy of the plant is going directly down into the roots.  It is storing up carbohydrates for the Winter and you can boost the root system of your lawn with a good feeding.  If you were going to feed the lawn only once per season, Late Fall Oct-Nov is the ideal time to do this.  Many times you will notice that this fertilizer treatment will help your grass get some spring green up the next season too.
