What are these Flying Insects?

It is Fall here in Cincinnati and Dayton and swarms of obnoxious insects may be ricocheting off your face as you mow or ride your bike.  What are these flying insects?  Many confuse them for giant mosquitoes.  They are not some sort of mutant mosquito that was infected with COVID.  They are actually Crane Flies.

Are crane flies dangerous?  No.  They do not bite/sting or cause issues with pets.  They just simply fly around looking to mate before they die.  The adult stage usually only lasts about two weeks.

What can I do about them?   Tolerate them.  The native species are actually beneficial insects.

What if I don’t want to tolerate them?  You can spray a traditional or natural insecticide to knock back the adult population.
